A new performability model for queueing and FDL-related burst loss in optical switching nodes

چکیده
Optical packet and burst switching have been proposed for networks because of the increased demand for capacity to transport traffic generated by various applications at present and in future. In optical packet switching networks the payload and the header of a packet are conveyed in the same channel, while burst switching networks allow the separate transportation of the payload and the header of bursts. In this paper we propose a queueing model for an optical node with a number of wavelengths and a buffer made from Fiber Delay Loops (FDL). We also apply negative customers in the queueing model in order to account for the loss of bursts due to the limitation related to the FDL (i.e. bursts can stay in a FDL buffer only for a limited period of time). Numerical results based on the analytical model are compared to the results obtained by simulation of optical burst switching nodes with the FDL buffer and input traffic using packet traces from the Internet Traffic Archive, which shows the accuracy of the proposed model. 2010 Elsevier B.V. Dimensioning of FDL Buffers for Optical Burst Switching Nodes
Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising candidate for a more dynamic optical layer in the context of IP over WDM. Although buffering is not mandatory for the functionality of OBS, even simple FDL buffers can improve burst loss probability. In this paper, we first discuss principal buffer architectures and reservation schemes for fiber delay line (FDL) buffers. Then, we investigate key desi...
متن کاملImpact of Burst Assembly on the Performance of FDL Buffers in Optical Burst-Switched Networks
Optical burst switching (OBS) is a new approach proposed with the objective of utilizing the huge transmission capacity available with WDM links both efficiently and cost effectively. Burst assembly is one of the main building blocks of this approach, which is performed at the edge of an OBS domain in order to generate bursts whose lengths are much larger than the switching time of all-optical ...
متن کاملPerformance meets technology - an integrated evaluation of OBS nodes with FDL buffers
In this paper, we show the benefit of an integrated analysis of performance and technology, as both signal degradation and burst losses limit the effective throughput of optical burst switching nodes. The investigation covers the Tune-andSelect (TAS) base architecture as well as extensions with dedicated and shared FDL buffers. First, we describe these node architectures and the OBS reservation...
متن کاملAnalysis of an Asynchronous Single-Wavelength FDL Buffer
We investigate the behaviour of an asynchronous single-wavelength fiber delay line (FDL) buffer by means of a continuous-time queueing model. Through a limit procedure, previously obtained results for a discrete-time queueing model are translated to a continuous-time setting. The two important cases of exponentially distributed burst sizes and deterministic burst sizes are discussed in detail. ...
متن کاملA discrete-time queueing network model of a hub-based OBS architecture
We propose and analyze a novel discrete-time queueing network model of a zero loss hub-based Optical Burst Switched (OBS) architecture, consisting of multiple input edge nodes and one destination edge node. The arrival process of bursts is slotted with bulk arrivals as generated by a Time and Burst-Length based burst aggregation algorithm. The queueing network is analyzed by decomposition. We o...
